Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra (HVYJO)
Hudson Valley Youth Jazz Orchestra (HVYJO) is the premier ensemble of hvJAZZ and is only open to students in grades 8-12 or 18 years of age or younger. Students audition to participate in this ensemble.
HVYJO will perform and compete at a very high level. This regional band will give the top youth musicians a regular opportunity to work alongside each other, as well as work with top-tier guest artists.
Students must be a level 5 or 6 NYSSMA jazz player. (Though you do not need to participate in NYSSMA) Students will be invited based on previous experiences or audition.
All students in HVYJO may also participate in the hvJAZZ/Suny Ulster Jazz Ensemble for no extra charge. This is a great opportunity to learn even more repertoire.
hvJAZZ Community Big Band
This ensemble consists of high school musicians (grades 8-12), Suny Ulster students and community members. This ensemble will focus on playing great big band repertoire including music by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Thad Jones and more.
This is a great experience for students to learn a lot of great literature and develop jazz skills including swing feel and jazz improvisation. This ensemble will also get to work with guest artists and perform in great venues. This group continues through the summer.
